recipe: lip balm
Brianna, my new daughter-in-law, and I enjoyed an entire afternoon making spa gifts for friends and family. We started with Lip Balms, then she shared her super easy and luxurious Salt Scrub. And finally, we made Poo~fraîche, our own version of Poo~Pourri deodorizing toilet spray.
The label design was Brianna's idea and inspired by her adorable and gigantic six-month old puppy, baby Beau (Beaumont). We designed it using PicMonkey.com, a free online photo editing site, and printed it on 1.8 x 1.8 labels template. Click here for the label template in Word format.
These DIY beauty and spa items make great gifts. Be sure to include your contact information, any instructions for use, and maybe a recipe either on the label or as a separate handout. Also let the recipient know you use doTERRA CPTG (Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade) essential oils in the products.
Makes about 18-20 lip balms in lipstick-style tubes
These instructions assume you will want to divide the batch to use two different oils or blends. If not, you will only need one heat-resistant glass measuring cup and saucepan for your water bath.
First batch we used 15 drops of Slim & Sassy blend (grapefruit peel, lemon peel, peppermint, ginger, cinnamon essential oils), second batch we used 10 drops lavender PLUS 5 drops peppermint. Since Brianna & Alex will be traveling to sun-filled Hawaii over the holidays, she decided a citrus-free blend, like the lavender~peppermint, would be a practical and lip-smackingly delicious. (Note ~ citrus oils can cause sun sensitivity.)
A. egg carton ~ make your own lip balm tube filling tray
Tip an empty egg carton upside down. Use an craft knife or kitchen sheers to cut an X through each of the circles on the egg carton. Poke your index finger through the X to make a round hole big enough to hold the lip balm tube. As you place each tube in a hole, check to be sure it's twisted all the way down (to the left) ~ otherwise, you will not be able to make a full tube.
recipe: sugar scrub for hands and body
About 1 c white sugar
1 1/2 - 2 T coconut oil or olive oil
1 - 2 drops essential oil (lavender, peppermint, wild orange, or your favorite blend)
1 t unscented castile soap (optional)
Simply blend ingredients (edible without the soap; soap is optional). Add more sugar or coconut/olive oil as need to create a "wet beach sand" consistency.
Store in a small glass jar. When ready to use, wet hands or body with warm water. Grab a scoop with fingers or a spoon and rub in circular motion to gently exfoliate dead skin. Rinse and pat dry. Will leave your skin feeling silkily and smooth.
recipe: poo~fraîche toilet spray
Poo~fraîche is our version of the popular Poo~Pourri, a toilet deodorizer. How does it work? When sprayed into the bowl (before you sit to do your business), it creates an invisible film which floats on the water and creates a surface barrier above the solids (capturing odors).
Our friend, Linda Anderman, who is an expert at using essential oils gave us the idea to add epsom salts to the mixture.
Top with water, screw misting spray top and close tightly to seal. Shake and it's ready to use. Before each use, shake gently.
Be creative with your essential oils using your favorite blends. Seasonally, you may want to change out the essential oils (warm holiday blends for the cold season, wild orange and citrus in the warmer seasons).
