12/19/2017

Picture
During our December 14th Essential Oils 30/30 program, we shared some of our favorite gift ideas for the holidays or any day. In our "men" category, we featured three DIY recipes including: a cleansing, purifying Shaving Gel, a Woodsy Beard Oil, and an Invigorating Aftershave. Listen to this program from our audio archives and enjoy the recipes below.

Get creative and design your own unique label or click here for one that is ready to print on your 8 x 11.5 label paper. Ideally, use the removable labels for up-cycling purposes.

Be sure to visit our friend Jason's Wise Beards website; check out this blog post: "7 Do It Yourself Beard Oil Recipes--the Ultimate DIY Guide" by Jason Hall.

shaving gel

½ c liquid castile soap (baby, unscented)
¼ c warm distilled or purified water
¼ c aloe vera gel (not juice)
½ t sea salt
2 T vegetable glycerine
1 T olive oil or fractionated coconut oil
8 drop Melaleuca essential oil
5 - 10 drops of your favorite essential oil for skin

Combine all ingredients in an essential oil safe foaming hand soap bottle; use glass or a plastic that has been designed for use with essential oils (doTERRA's OnGuard foaming hand soap bottles are perfect).

Melaleuca essential oil--supports healthy skin and aromatically, it promotes cleansing and purifying, and the scent blends well with citrus like Bergamot and Wild orange or other essential oils such as Cypress, Eucalyptus, Lavender, Rosemary, and Thyme.

woodsy beard oil

Makes 2 - 3 ounces
Small glass eyedropper or cap bottle

ingredients
1 ounce fractionated coconut oil or ½ ounce
jojoba oil plus ½ ounce sweet almond oil
1 T fractionated coconut oil
3 to 4 drops Cedarwood oil
3 to 4 drops Sandalwood oil

directions
Add fractionated coconut oil and other oils to the bottle. Next, add the essential oils, place the cap on tightly and shake well (before each use). Using your hands or eyedropper, apply a few drops and massage into the beard and onto the cheeks. Brush the beard for the finishing touch.

Cedarwood essential oil--offers natural properties that can help to reduces skin irritations. Aromatically and even has aromatherapy benefits for balancing emotions and feelings of self doubt. Did you know that cedarwood symbolizes a source of protection, wisdom and abundance?

Sandalwood essential oil--can help with dry skin and hair when applied topically; also soothing to any skin irritation. It is also a natural astringent, and some say an aphrodisiac. Aromatically, it can help balance emotions, is calming, mood enhancing, and may help with mental clarity. It’s aroma is woodsy, sweet, earthy.

invigorating aftershave

ingredients
1 c fractionated coconut oil
5 to 10 drops of each: Melaleuca, Eucalyptus, and Juniper Berry essential oil
Top with distilled or purified water to thin

instructions
Combine all ingredients in a small glass bottle (optionally, a bottle with a spray top). After shaving, spray on affected areas or splash on and enjoy the invigorating qualities and aroma. Shake before each use.

Juniper berry essential oil--offers astringent and cleansing properties, and can help with reducing inflammation of the skin. By the way, make an excellent toner by adding to alcohol free witch hazel.

Eucalyptus essential oil--may help reduce inflammation of the skin and it naturally helps clear the airways (helpful during this time of year when seasonal threats are high and we are dealing with congestion). Eucalyptus blends well with Bergamot.

quality matters-use pure, therapeutic grade essential oils

Yes, quality matters. Essential oil and their constituents (and whatever products we apply to our skin) have the potential to affect every cell of the body within 20 minutes. Bargain brands, even when labeled 100% pure, often contain synthetic fillers, additives, and toxins.

We at santadotfe.com only use doTERRA essential oils because we trust their safety, purity, potency, and therapeutic efficacy--and here's why:

doTERRA is committed to sourcing the best essential oils in the world, direct from artisan growers. They are also committed to ethical sourcing practices (that's important to me) through their Co-Impact Sourcing Initiative.

doTERRA essential oils surpass USDA organic standards and each batch, every bottle, undergoes seven different testing procedures by a third-party laboratory. Many experts say they can "smell the difference" right when they take off the lid.

doTERRA is a humanitarian-minded company with many ongoing projects--including earthquake relief in Nepal and Mentors International Micro-Lending--and committed to giving back to the communities that grow and harvest their essential oils.

Ask the person who shared this blog post how to buy doTERRA essential oils at retail or, better yet, at Wholesale prices! If you don't have a source, please complete the brief form below to begin your essential oil journey today.

DIY project: make your own woodsy-earthy cologne

3/2/2017

These cologne recipes are unisex. Feel free to switch up the oils to make your own personal blend. We used approximately 20% oil and 80% carrier oil based. If you want a stronger scent, you can make it a 30/70 ratio. The cologne recipes below make 1/3 oz. and the amounts are intended for use with a 10mL rollerball vial.
Picture
Materials

10 ml Glass rollerball vial, recipes below make 1/3 oz
Dropper or pipette (optional)
Fractionated coconut oil
Picture
Directions

Combine a tiny amount of fractionated coconut oil and all the essential oils in the vial. Use a dropper or pipette, if you prefer, to add the essential oils. Add more fractionated coconut oil to fill the bottle. Attach roll-on top and cap, then shake until combined. Let mixture sit for 24 hours before use. Apply cologne to wrists and pulse points for best results.

Tip

Make a small batch first to be sure you like the scent. Modify as desired or, if it's just right, continue to make a larger batch.

Picture
One list of ingredients + one recipes for two DIY personal care items. The body wash or hand soap is a quick, easy, and inexpensive project and makes a super hostess gift or gift for anyone, anytime, or "just because."

ingredients:

Pure castile soap, pure vegetable glycerin, fractionated coconut oil, and lavender and peppermint essential oils.

recipe:

1 c  castille soap

4 T glycerine

1/4 c honey
2 T fractionated coconut oil

10 drops lavender essential oils

5 drops peppermint essential oils
Add all ingredients to a spouted bowl. Mix thoroughly. Pour into glass pump container {glass is recommended for essential oils but is breakable, so be careful about where you set this in or near your shower or bathtub}. Before pumping and while hands are dry, give the bottle a shake before each use.

Remember, local honey is always healthier and better ~ for you, the bees, and our economy. Be sure to visit our neighborhood beekeepers and friends, Louella and Ed Constanza, at the Eldorado Farmers Market opening in June.

DIY : lip balm, sugar scrub, and poo~fraîche toilet spray

12/1/2014

recipe: lip balm

Brianna, my new daughter-in-law, and I enjoyed an entire afternoon making spa gifts for friends and family. We started with Lip Balms, then she shared her super easy and luxurious Salt Scrub. And finally, we made Poo~fraîche, our own version of Poo~Pourri deodorizing toilet spray.

The label design was Brianna's idea and inspired by her adorable and gigantic six-month old puppy, baby Beau (Beaumont). We designed it using PicMonkey.com, a free online photo editing site, and printed it on 1.8 x 1.8 labels template. Click here for the label template in Word format.

These DIY beauty and spa items make great gifts. Be sure to include your contact information, any instructions for use, and maybe a recipe either on the label or as a separate handout. Also let the recipient know you use doTERRA CPTG (Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade) essential oils in the products.
Makes about 18-20 lip balms in lipstick-style tubes
Equipment

Lip balm tubes

One or two small-medium saucepans

One or two small-medium heat-resistant glass measuring cups with spouts

Handle of two wooden spoons or large wooden craft sticks

Pipette (optional)

Two empty egg cartons to make your own tube filling tray
Picture

Picture
Brianna's fun label
Ingredients

3 T plus 1  1/2 t beeswax

1/2 ounce cocoa butter (about 7 wafers)

1 T shea butter

2 level T coconut oil

30 drops essential oils (we divided the mixture; see below)
Instruction

These instructions assume you will want to divide the batch to use two different oils or blends. If not, you will only need one heat-resistant glass measuring cup and saucepan for your water bath.
  1. Prepare your lip balm tubes for filling (see A. below)
  2. Create a water bath by adding a couple inches of water to the saucepan(s), heat to just at boil and turn down to a medium heat
  3. Place a glass measuring cup(s) in the water bath(s) ~ if you are using two, one will be empty, but warming up as we melt the full batch ~ reduce heat to medium-low or low
  4. Starting with the beeswax (since it takes the longest to melt), measure and add to one of the measuring cups all of the beeswax, cocoa butter, shea butter, and coconut oil
  5. Stir until all ingredients are melted
  6. Pour half of the melted wax, butters, and oils (about 1/4 cup) into the second, empty measuring cup that has been warming in a water bath
  7. Reduce both burners to low heat, add the 15 drops of essential oils to one of the measuring cups, stir, and gently pour into the lip balm tubes
  8. Let mixture cool ~ your first batch is done
  9. Repeat steps 7 & 8 for your second batch
First batch we used 15 drops of Slim & Sassy blend (grapefruit peel, lemon peel, peppermint, ginger, cinnamon essential oils), second batch we used 10 drops lavender PLUS 5 drops peppermint. Since Brianna & Alex will be traveling to sun-filled Hawaii over the holidays, she decided a citrus-free blend, like the lavender~peppermint, would be a practical and lip-smackingly delicious. (Note ~ citrus oils can cause sun sensitivity.)

A. egg carton ~ make your own lip balm tube filling tray

Tip an empty egg carton upside down. Use an craft knife or kitchen sheers to cut an X through each of the circles on the egg carton. Poke your index finger through the X to make a round hole big enough to hold the lip balm tube. As you place each tube in a hole, check to be sure it's twisted all the way down (to the left) ~ otherwise, you will not be able to make a full tube.

recipe: sugar scrub for hands and body

Picture
Ingredients

About 1 c white sugar
1 1/2 - 2 T coconut oil or olive oil

1 - 2 drops essential oil (lavender, peppermint, wild orange, or your favorite blend)

1 t unscented castile soap (optional)

Instruction

Simply blend ingredients (edible without the soap; soap is optional). Add more sugar or coconut/olive oil as need to create a "wet beach sand" consistency.

Store in a small glass jar. When ready to use, wet hands or body with warm water. Grab a scoop with fingers or a spoon and rub in circular motion to gently exfoliate dead skin. Rinse and pat dry. Will leave your skin feeling silkily and smooth.

recipe: poo~fraîche toilet spray

Poo~fraîche is our version of the popular Poo~Pourri, a toilet deodorizer. How does it work? When sprayed into the bowl (before you sit to do your business), it creates an invisible film which floats on the water and creates a surface barrier above the solids (capturing odors).

Our friend, Linda Anderman, who is an expert at using essential oils gave us the idea to add epsom salts to the mixture.
Equipment

2 ounce amber or dark color spray bottle

Ingredients

About 1/2 - 1 t epsom salts

4 drops of lavender essential oil
2 drops peppermint essential oil

Less than 2 ounces water

Instruction

Add epsom salts to a 2 ounce spray bottle. Add essential oils.
Picture
My santadotfe label ~ empty bottle at less than $1 retail
Top with water, screw misting spray top and close tightly to seal. Shake and it's ready to use. Before each use, shake gently.

Be creative with your essential oils using your favorite blends. Seasonally, you may want to change out the essential oils (warm holiday blends for the cold season, wild orange and citrus in the warmer seasons).
